Toon Teeken: Photo books 1968-2015
& Recent Work

Visual artist Toon Teeken (1944 Heerlen – Maastricht) has been working on his photo books for over 45 years. He made his first photo collage in 1968, and there are now 96 numbered volumes, each comprising around a hundred pages. The overarching theme is photos – usually taken by the artist himself. At first, they are mainly family snapshots, but the compositions soon become more complex through the addition of newspaper cuttings, handwritten texts and drawings.

Teeken has won several awards, including the Royal Grant Award for Modern Painting in 1978 and the Van Bommel Van Dam Prize in 1985. In the late 1980s, he exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Stadsgalerij Heerlen and the Bonnefanten. In 2006, Toon Teeken held a solo presentation in Museum Het Valkhof, in Nijmegen. The book about his work, More is More, was published in the same year.

The book 'Toon Teeken The Photo Books', with almost 400 spreads from Teeken's collage books, has been published by Uitgeverij Huis Clos.
