The Studio #7: The Same Room

Minne Kersten graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam) in 2016 and participated in De Ateliers (Amsterdam) from 2018 to 2020. In 2022, she was nominated for the Royal Award for Modern Painting and the Volkskrant Fine Art Award, and was selected for a residency with Triangle-Astérides (Marseille, France).

Emotional connection with architecture

Minne Kersten (1993, Utrecht) explores how human emotions are interwoven with architectural spaces. While a building exists physically as a place, people also interpret it psychologically through feelings and memories associated with that place. Kersten is specifically interested in how a space changes when something traumatic has taken place there.

In The Same Room, Kersten's personal experiences form the basis for the creation of a fictional world, comprised of an installation, paintings and a sculpture. The emotional impact is depicted through water. Through these different media, Kersten explores the possible interpretations of suggestive images. Which story does the viewer create?
