If it’s your birthday, it's your treat—so here’s a full day of fun!
On Sunday, May 25, the Céramique district celebrates its 25th anniversary. Bonnefanten, Maastricht Museum in Centre Céramique, and the Céramique Neighbourhood Network are joining forces to go big. From 11:00 to 17:00, the area will turn into a lively festival ground for all ages—both inside and outside the museums—with free access to art, culture, workshops, walks, lectures, music, and the delicious baking competition Bake for your neighbour(hood).
In and around Bonnefanten, all free❣️
And here’s a secret: our striking Aldo Rossi-designed museum building is also turning 30! During Bonnefanten Free Sunday, the museum and all exhibitions can be visited free of charge.
Art appreciation and workshops like ‘The Reverse Engineer’
Get to know artist Carl Cheng and his exhibition Nature Never Loses—a thought-provoking tribute to the resilience of nature in a world full of human interference. Want to get hands-on? Head to the Do-it-yourself Lab where you can craft, draw, deconstruct, and build in the workshop “The Reverse Engineer”, inspired by Cheng’s work.
Bonnefanten Art Market: Big Art, Small Prices
The Bonnefanten Art Market is back in our auditorium! This is a unique opportunity to purchase original artworks from the ’80s, ’90s, and '00s.
Discover the mini-Maas Island in front of the museum
At 11:00 AM, the temporary mini-Maas island De Weerd will be festively opened on the museum plaza. Created by duo Stefan Cools and Sandra van den Beuken, this ecological garden is ready to explore—don’t miss the educational “Haywagon”!
Up for a walk around the neighbourhood? Grab a Discovery Bag or join the adventurous Tourist Trap Tour.
100-meter table with coffee and pie, Fry Cannon, and more
In the Charles Eyck Park along the Maas river, a spectacular 100-meter-long table awaits—perfect for enjoying free coffee and traditional Limburg vlaai (fruit tart). Participate in playful and educational activities like crafting a candy garden, making a plant pot from old jeans, or building an insect hotel. Or just sit back and enjoy the theatrical Fry Cannon.
Looking for something deeper? The Céramique Neighbourhood Network hosts lectures, guided neighbourhood walks, and the photo exhibition 25 Years of Céramique in 25 Portraits by photographer Sarina Uilenberg. Don’t miss the surprise act, Purse Nurse, either!
Music and a surprise act from Maastricht!
Be amazed by wonderful and unexpected music from Maastricht—performed in, on, or around our iconic Rossi tower.
Join the baking competition: Bake for your neighbour(hood)
The sweet highlight of the day: the baking competition Bake for your neighbour(hood), where local residents share their most delicious baked creations. From home bakers to pastry wizards—everyone is welcome to join. A panel of expert judges will select the winners, who stand a chance to win great prizes, made possible by local businesses in Céramique and Wyck.
Lectures, workshops, tours, and pop-ups
At Centre Céramique, you can also visit the Maastricht Museum for free. Enjoy creative workshops, interactive exhibitions, children’s storytelling sessions, and a panel discussion with Jo Coenen and Huub Smeets on the urban development of the Céramique district.
A true highlight: the FASHIONCLASH Pop-up Atelier, where visitors can create blue flags and banners from textile scraps, inspired by traditional Ommegangen (parades).
So come by—taste, discover, enjoy, and win!
This anniversary celebration is made possible by the Municipality of Maastricht, Province of Limburg, Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, Bonnefanten, Centre Céramique, Céramique Neighbourhood Network, Maastricht Museum, and Cultuurmakers Maastricht.
