BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions

The starting point for this hypnotic essay film is the Encyclopedia Africana, started by W.E.B. DuBois, who sought to open up Black culture to a new generation. Joseph has fond memories of the encyclopedia, thanks to his father, who gave it as a gift to his now-deceased brother. In his first feature-length film, Joseph moves back and forth through time. Through a rapid montage of a fictional Afrofuturist narrative, memes, music and video, he builds upon his eponymous film installation BLKNWS from 2019, which is part of the Bonnefanten collection.

Kahlil Joseph

Kahlil Joseph gained notoriety in the early 2010s for his beautifully-shot short films made in collaboration with some of the most respected, politically engaged, and forward-thinking hip-hop artists of the moment, such as Kendrick LamarFlying LotusShabazz Palaces, and FKA Twigs, as well as indie rock bands such as Arcade Fire. Initially hailed as one of the most important hip hop video directors (he is also one of the seven filmmakers who directed with Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade), he is now considered one of the most influential contemporary installation artists. He also serves as the artistic director of the Underground Museum in Los Angeles, co-founded with his late brother, the artist Noah Davis. His video installation BLKNWS is part of the Bonnefanten collection and played an important role in the exhibition SAY IT LOUD (2020–2021). Since then, the work has been shown multiple times in the museum galleries. Kahlil Joseph is no stranger to Bonnefanten. In 2017–2018, the museum presented his first major solo exhibition in Europe, titled NEW SUNS. The artist will join us for a Q&A after the screening.

The film installation BLKNWS will be on view again at Bonnefanten, from March 24.

BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions is also included in the programme of the Warmoes Biennale 2026, in addition to this special screening.
