In Memoriam – Alexander van Grevenstein (1948-2026)

From 1986 to 2012, Alexander van Grevenstein served as Director of Bonnefanten, leading the museum with vision and international ambition.

We remember him with deep gratitude for his lasting contribution to the museum and for the dedication with which he strengthened its international profile, always guided by a profound commitment to both people and art.

During his directorship, the museum's iconic building, designed by Aldo Rossi, opened in 1995. Under his leadership, the collection was enriched with major works by artists including Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, Marcel Broodthaers, Mario Merz, Robert Mangold, Luciano Fabro and Susana Solano, while the collection of historical art was also significantly expanded.

In honour of Alexander van Grevenstein's remarkable legacy, Bonnefanten is presenting Sol LeWitt's Wavy Brushstrokes (1995) until the end of August. LeWitt (1928–2007) was not only one of the most influential artists represented in the collection but also a close personal friend of Van Grevenstein.
