Bonnefanten presents a free Pop-up Museum at Cultura Nova featuring work by artist Malina Suliman, currently on view in The Studio #11 at Bonnefanten.

During Cultura Nova, the Bonnefanten Pop-up Museum comes to Heerlen with work by artist Malina Suliman. Discover her impressive world map made of earth, become part of a performance where borders dissolve, and get creative yourself.

Malina Suliman

Malina Suliman (1990, Kandahar) is an Afghan artist who lives and works in the Netherlands. From a young age, she created art addressing oppression and women's rights. As a result, it became unsafe for her to remain in Afghanistan, and she sought refuge in the Netherlands. Her work explores exile, identity and social justice. She questions the political and social structures that perpetuate exclusion and inequality. Suliman reveals that borders are not fixed realities, but human constructions that can both divide and connect people.

At Cultura Nova, Suliman presents a world map made from locally sourced earth. Within this world map in the Pop-up Museum, visitors can move freely from one country to another. In reality, however, this freedom is out of reach for many people, whose passports do not grant access to every country.

A borderless performance

The earthen world map will be created twice during a live performance, on Saturday 29 August and Friday 4 September. Visitors are invited to witness the creation of the map and to walk and dance across it. Together, we blur borders and transform the world into a shared landscape.

Plenty to discover

Under the canopy of the Pop-up Museum, there is plenty of space to get creative. Use earth to create your own country and experiment with shapes, borders and landscapes. You can also get a temporary tattoo or simply relax in one of the deck chairs.
