What is Keti Koti?
Keti Koti means "broken chains" in Sranantongo, a creole language spoken in Suriname. Slavery was officially abolished on 1 July 1863, but it wasn’t until ten years later that true emancipation was realised. Keti Koti is a moment to reflect on a shared past that continues to shape the present.
Programme in collaboration with Stichting Sankofa
Together with Stichting Sankofa (formerly the Keti Koti/Kibra Kadena Committee South Limburg), we present an evening programme centred around the theme Roots of Freedom. What does freedom mean today? And how is it connected to the past? Throughout the evening, we explore these questions together with the public.
Keti Koti 2025 is made possible with the support of the Municipality of Maastricht and in collaboration with Stichting Sankofa.
