Struck by the light that seemed to make the city melancholic, Werner Mantz was won over by Maastricht on his very first visit. He was on his way to Brussels by motorbike, but one Sunday afternoon, together with his comrade and associate Karl Mergenbaum, he lingered in our city, and since then Maastricht has never let him go. Finally, circumstances compelled him to leave his birthplace and hometown of Cologne and exchange it for the quiet provincial town on the Limburg Meuse, for it was the silver light of the Meuse, in which he found his destiny.
