Aldo Rossi's Museo di Maastricht

Since 1995, the Bonnefantenmuseum is located in the building which was designed by the Italian architect Aldo Rossi (1931-1997). The building's architecture is an object of interest in itself. The austere, closed outside of the E-shaped building is in stark contrast with the variation of spaces and the play of the daylight within.
Rossi's visual language appeals to the imagination. The famous Treppenstraße (monumental stairs) that leads to the exhibition rooms is very impressive. The undisputed highlight is the Cupola. This is not just because of its striking silhouette on the Maastricht skyline, but also because of the exciting link this architectural highlight forges with the art exhibited within it.
