Open Day 2011
Showtime!
Sunday 20 November, 11 am -5 pm
Free entrance to the museum
This year's Open Day, with its inspiring title Showtime!, revolves around an intensive collaboration with foreign students. The university city of Maastricht is home to over 6000 international students; around half the city's total student population. The Bonnefantenmuseum is providing a platform for the students to explore how they see Maastricht and the museum itself. The programme, run by over 100 enthusiastic participants, will consist of performances, guided tours, workshops, a poetry lounge and even an information market.
Showtime!
The participants took their inspiration from the art in the museum – in the exhibition
Extended Drawing and in the collection presentation of old masters and contemporary art
Augenspiel. Students from the Conservatorium Maastricht were inspired by the works in
Extended Drawing. There will be performances of a composition by Jesse Passenier about the work by Sol leWitt, Wall drawing #1183, and a capella compositions by Maximilian Wallrath in front of works by Robert Mangold. The theatre group Alles is Drama has created a special production A forbidden love in a play of lines, which will be performed next to the work of Sol LeWitt. Thijs Leuven will be combining saxophone and electronics, and Gilles Noesen will be creating a shadow performance with a jazz and string quartet.
And of course the guided tours will also be looking at the exhibitions and collection presentations. Books4Life will give several literary tours that forge links between a selection of art works and the world of literature. Concordantia will explain some of the art movements in Augenspiel from the perspective of Europe in the making. Kitjia Vasiljeva will present an in-depth comparison of the work of American artists Richard Serra and Sol LeWitt. Patrizia Koening will tell personal stories about paintings by Peter Doig and Rene Daniels, among others. And director Alexander van Grevenstein and cultural philosopher Guido Goossens will discuss their views on
Extended Drawing.
Workshops, poetry lounge and photo competitions: join in!
Visitors to the Open Day will be invited to play an active role. For instance, you can take part in one of the inspiring workshops set up by the students in Studio Rossi: in
Cadavre Exquis, you can draw while listening to different pieces of music, and the exciting results will be put on display at the end. In a walk-in workshop alongside the drawings of Bruce Nauman, you will be challenged to add your personal impression to a (digital) wall drawing. And then there is a whole afternoon of poetry – the Poetry Lounge, in collaboration with Mix &' Mingle. In
Tower of Babylon, you are one of several interactive poets contributing to the creation of a joint oeuvre. The performances will include a group show by the student poet club Speyksessies from Rotterdam. In between the performances, there are workshops in which foreign students and visitors are guided in turning their experiences into poetry.
You could be the lucky winner of an iPad.
You can also demonstrate your visual talent by taking part in a special competition to be launched at the Open Day. We are organising a
Just add art! photo competition with the Bonnefanten app. In case you're not yet familiar with
Just add art!, it is the museum's fun app that you can use to pimp your photos with details of works from the Bonnefanten collection. The most beautiful, craziest or funniest photo of the Open Day will win a great prize: an iPad!
During the Open Day, a one-day exhibition will be held, entitled
Vernissage, Experience Maastricht My Way. It will display photos and sketches in which students portray their life in the city. A professional jury will announce the winner at the end of the Open Day. This lucky artist will also be presented with an iPad by alderman Jacques Costongs.
The Open Day was initiated in 2005 by the City of Maastricht, with the goal of increasing citizens' familiarity with the museum. Up to now, over 12,500 people – from Maastricht and elsewhere – have taken part in the activity. Partners in creating the content of previous editions have included the Bonnefanten College, the Kumulus Centre for the Arts and the Maastricht Theatre Academy.
With thanks to all participants in the 2011 edition: Alles is drama, Books4Life, Concordantia, the Maastricht Academy of Music, ESN, Mix and Mingle, Orakel, Stukafest, University of Maastricht and University College.
The complete programme will be published on our website. Become a fan of the Open Day on Facebook !
Practical
The Open Day is free for everyone and there is no charge for participating in any of the day's activities, guided tours and workshops. An information market will be organised in the hall on the ground floor of the museum, where all the participating organisations will hold presentations for the public.
