Sidi El Karchi / Bas de Wit

11 April – 27 June 2010

With the dual presentation of the (recent) work of Sidi El Karchi and Bas de Wit, the museum is breaking ground with regard to exhibiting artists from the home front.

El Karchi and de Wit are certainly not a duo; they are rather each other's opposite. Take, for instance, the attention to detail displayed by El Karchi in his portraits, by which he almost presents himself as a 'fijnschilder' (literally fine-painter). Then take the rather loose approach de Wit demonstrates in assembling visual elements – as well in his paintings as in his sculptures - as if they could become separated again just like that.

El Karchi and de Wit are the opposite extremes of one another. And in this capacity, they serve as a model for a visual art that can manifest itself in a thousand and one ways. Every one of those options has the right to exist and makes up part of the enormous sample sheet that makes art so exciting. Museums that only focus on one of all the options are proclaiming poverty and dogma.
We think we should search for a way by which a single glance picks up differences and singularities.

Presenting the work of these artists side by side creates a clash between paintings and drawings that express a frozen silence and images and paintings that declare their presence through daring and bravura.

The formula for staging such a confrontation has been devised in order to expel the 'eulogising nature' of many solo presentations.
