The Hidden Life Of Things - Panta Rhei

Bonnefanten in Alden Biesen. Collection extra-muros
14.10 - 04.12.2011

For the second time, the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen in Bilzen (B) and the Bonnefantenmuseum of Maastricht (NL) collaborate on an exhibition project.
The Hidden Life Of Things - Panta Rhei consists of a selection of installations and sculptures by young and established artists from the contemporary art collection of the Maastricht museum.

The Hidden Life Of Things - Panta Rhei, investigates our connection to the objects around us and invites the viewer to look at "things" in a different way. The ancient saying "Panta Rhei" or "everything flows" is attributed to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus (6th – 5th century BC) and is based on the symbolic idea that one cannot step twice in the same stream of water. In other words, "all things move and nothing remains still". Daily life objects, "things" and other "stuff" that one can see, touch, hear, taste, smell and use have always been represented in works of art. Yet, these common things, whether natural objects or manufactured item, usually imply something else. In other words, objects often have an underlying symbolic dimension.

The sculptures and installations of fourteen international artists in this exhibition offer a new angle to look at things that surround us. Franz West's (Vienna, 1947) work Panta Rhei (1996) inspired the theme of this exhibition. The work includes a chair which has an underlying meaning for the artist. It is also an invitation for the public to sit down within the installation, physically connect with the work and thus experience art from a complete different perspective.

With works by:

Piet Killaars (NL), Fransje Killaars (NL), Atelier van Lieshout (NL), Franz West (AT), Capitaine Lonchamps (B), Sylvie Macias Diaz (B), Patrick van Caeckenbergh (B), Mario Merz (IT), Isa Melsheimer (DE), Han van Wetering (NL), Suchan Kinoshita (DE/JP), Mai-Thu Perret (CH), Bas de Wit (NL) en Lily van der Stokker (NL).
