Ecce Homo
Southern Netherlands, circa 1525
With the assistance of the Mondriaan Foundation, the Bonnefantenmuseum was recently able to acquire a unique statue from the Southern Netherlands from around 1525. The statue represents a life-size figure of Christ at the moment he was shown to the people by Pilate after his flogging; Ecce Homo. Such a representation, especially as a woodcarving, is exceptional in West-European art and therefore a valuable addition to the museum’s extensive collection of woodcarvings from the same period. Furthermore, the statue has retained a large part of its original painting, and thus forms a welcome exception to many other statues whose polychrome has usually been removed. At the moment, the museum is carrying out technical and art-historical research on the new Ecce Homo, and the results of this will be made public next year.
