Johannes de evangelist
Kunstenaar onbekend
1320 ca.

The remarkably elongated statue was originally part of a Calvary group. In this Crucifixion group, St. John would have stood on the right-hand side of a Christ on the cross that is unknown as yet. The pendant, a statue of the Virgin, has survived, but has been damaged in the past by inexpert treatment. It is possible that the group stood high up on a crossbeam in a church, which would explain the remarkable length of the statue of St. John. Some rare traces of the original polychromy can still be seen on the woodcarving.
