This crosier was made in the French city of Limoges, a major centre of precious metalwork often richly decorated with enamel. The application of the champlevé technique is characteristic of Limoges enamel, whereby enamel (molten glass powder) is applied to grooves in the copper. This method of working produced solid objects, which was important as most objects were used often during the church services. This is one of the reasons why Limoges enamel was so popular and found its way into churches and monasteries all over Europe. The crook of the crosier depicts an angel fighting a dragon, which is a symbolic reference to the triumph of good over evil.
