Mediaeval sculpture & applied art 


One of the highlights is the collection Jan van Steffeswert, the woodcarver who lived and worked in Maastricht around 1500. It was exceptional for that time that he not only put a maker's mark on his works, but also signed and dated them. Along with his oeuvre is the museum in possession of a collection of woodcarving and altar fragments, focused on the art from the Southern Netherlands and the area round the Maas and Rhine rivers. A special feature is the rich Neutelings Collection, which includes hundreds of objects made of ivory, (Limoges) enamel, alabaster and bronze originating from French, English and Flemish workshops (between 1200 en 1500).

16th and early 17th-century painting from the Southern Netherlands 


The presentation old painting begins with famous names: Joachim Beuckelaer, Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Pieter Brueghel the Younger. In the rich collection, the emphasis is put on art from Antwerp, and one of the themes focused on is workshop practices. The journey through the Southern Netherlands of old masters continues with enchanting landscapes by Jan Brueghel, Joos de Momper, Roelant Savery, and many others, and ends with portraits by painters such as Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens and Peter Paul Rubens.

Open conservation workshop


The open conservation studio of the SRAL (Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg)is a space worth visiting in the rooms of the ancient art department. On Tuesday, the public is able to follow the extensive conservation sessions live treatment of art objects of the museum's collection.
