Joëlle Tuerlinckx

Getting to the bottom of the oeuvre of the Brussels artist Joëlle Tuerlinckx is no easy task. The materials used, such as paper, chipboard and slats, have a cheap and temporary appearance. Objects set up here and there possess hardly any sculptural qualities and neither the video images which appear on monitors and as projections nor the voices which issue from the loudspeakers at set times seem to have any meaning or significance. It even seems as if all this has nothing whatsoever to do with art.
Nevertheless, her installations and sounds belong in a museum. They are about art, namely about how the creation of a work of art can coincide with the process of perception. Tuerlinckx thinks that there is an indissoluble tie between idea and execution. Works of art are to be seen as concrete, solidified moments in a continual artistic process. Tuerlinckx, however, refuses to let her work come to a standstill, or to fix it in a particular form. In her view, there is also no division between the processes of creation and exhibition; creating is exhibiting and vice versa. This means that her works are permanently unfinished exhibits. From the perspective of a world in perpetual motion, she attempts, in an infinitely creative process, to reconcile the finite (a work of art, an exhibition) with the infinite (an idea, the artistic process).
In the period 2001-2003, the museum acquired three room-sized installations entitled ‘A Stretch Museum, Scale 1:1’. In 2004, ‘#Livrets Documenta 11:21’ (2002-2004) was added to the collection.
