Fons Haagmans
1948, Schinnen - Maastricht

The appeal of Haagmans’ painting lies in the changing level of abstraction of the successive depictions. For his early paintings, Haagmans derived visual elements from the magic square, playing cards, the Tarot and emblematic and heraldic figures. They are symbolic figures, the specific meanings of which have faded from our collective memory, but which obviously refer to something or someone outside themselves. Haagmans isolates these figures, enlarging them and placing them in a funereal context. The same approach has been used in the most recently acquired series of works. Lost Highway (2003) portrays Haagmans’ heroes from country and western music, with the recognisable figures of Hank Williams and Tammy Wynette.
The museum’s collection includes twenty paintings, eighteen drawings, several series of prints and a monumental wall painting (2004) by Fons Haagmans. The earliest painting dates from 1978.
