Medieval Art / Collection Jeanne en Willem Neutelings

In 1996, the Bonnefantenmuseum was enriched by this private collection, which consists of around two hundred medieval works of art. Recently the museum was able to add a further thirty works to this collection. Each and every one of the objects can be regarded as a highlight of medieval art of North West Europe.
Firstly, there is the small Antwerp house altar with the Adoration of the Shepherds, by the Master of 1518, which is in unusually good condition. Another small Lower Rhine house altar from around 1500, with statues of Virgin and Child flanked by St. Barbara and St. Catherine, is also on display. Besides these small retables, the collection includes enamelled bronze objects from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, as well as some small fourteenth-century ivory diptychs and statues.
In short, it is not without reason that this private collection is regarded as one of the most important acquisitions for the Netherlandish Cultural Patrimony over the last fifty years. The collection put together by Willem Neutelings (1916-1986) have now found a permanent home in the Bonnefantenmuseum.
